NIA Intramural Research Program Annual Scientific Retreat
Each Spring NIA's Intramural Research Program (IRP) sponsors a Scientific Retreat. The retreat goals are 1) to foster collaboration among individuals in the IRP; 2) to train junior staff in oral and poster presentation of scientific work; 3) to learn about new and ongoing areas of research.
Postdoctoral, predoctoral IRTA's and Visiting Fellows compete for the Nathan Shock Trainee Award by presenting their research at the Annual Scientific Retreat. The winners, selected by the Scientific Director, Deputy Scientific Director, and Laboratory Chiefs, receive a travel award and plaque. The research competition is sponsored by the Nathan W. and Margaret T. Shock Aging Research Foundation. Dr. Nathan W. Shock, who died in 1989, was the first NIA Scientific Director and is considered by some to be the father of gerontology.

NIH - Fellows Award for Research Excellence (FARE)
Fellows are encouraged to participate in the annual NIH-wide Fellows Award for Research Excellence (FARE) competition. The FARE award provides recognition for outstanding scientific research performed by intramural postdoctoral fellows. The award is sponsored by the NIH Fellows Committee, the Scientific Directors, the Office of Research on Women's Health, and the NIH Office of Education, and is funded by the Scientific Directors and the Office of Research on Women's Health. Fellows submit an abstract of their research, which is peer reviewed in a blind study section. The FARE award can be used to cover costs related to attending a scientific meeting.

NIH Fellows Committee
The NIH Fellows Committee consists of representatives from each institute working to enhance the intramural training program, foster communication among fellows and the NIH community, and serve as a liaison to administrative programs affecting the training experience. Representatives are selected for one year appointments based on elections and the recommendation of the ICD Scientific Director.
NIA Fellows Representatives:
Vonetta Dotson, Ph.D., Laboratory of Personality and Cognition
Anthony Woo, Ph.D., Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science
Jason Aulds, Ph.D., Laboratory of Molecular Gerontology (Ad Hoc)
Scientific Director's Training Award in Research (STAR)
The STAR award is a research grant established in 2000 available exclusively to NIA Intramural Research Program postdoctoral fellows. The award is intended to give trainees experience in writing grants and to prepare fellows for an independent research career. The program encourages innovative proposals that use basic or clinical approaches to understand the fundamentals of aging or to define the mechanisms of age-related diseases. The grant provides up to $25,000 per year to support two years of intramural research directed by the fellow.
