GLASS bottles and broken glass items

UNCONTAMINATED ITEMS or ITEMS WITH SLIGHT CHEMICAL RESIDUAL ONLY!

broken glass container
or
any durable corrugated cardboard box
Tape box securely shut with filament tape. Prominently label corrugated box with words "WASTE GLASS". If contaminated by biohazardous or radioactive materials, you must first decontaminate; otherwise, use biohazard or radioactive waste stream.
ANIMAL carcasses that are NOT radioactive colorless bags Durable colorless bags are available from the Animal Colony. Place sealed bags in animal carcass freezer in 2nd floor Animal Colony, G Corridor.
ANIMAL carcasses that ARE radioactive yellow bags Label with radioactive materials sticker. Attach radioactive waste pickup tag. Freeze in lab. Call Radioactive Waste Services for pickup 301-496-4451.
SHARPS
(needles, pasteur pipettes, syringes, scalpels, razor blades, etc.)
red plastic sharps box Sharps boxes can be purchased through the NIH catalog. Do not cut or recap needles.
Label with radioactive materials sticker if applicable. Tape box securely shut with filament tape when 2/3 full and place in biohazard waste box for disposal.
BIOHAZARDOUS materials

(aka: medical pathological waste [MPW] or red bag or burn box waste)

includes: all items contaminated with human or animal blood & body fluids; mircobiological & tissue cultures & media; sharps in sharp-safe containers

biohazard waste, or MPW, or burn box lined with two red bags

*2 box sizes (Sm. & Lrg) available free from autoclave/ utility rooms on 1st, 2nd and 4th floors

Place all Biohazardous materials in MPW boxes. For instructions on box setup, contact Pete Felton or the NIA IRP Safety Office, 410-558-8028. When sealed, place MPW box in locked biohazard shed on loading dock. Each lab has the combination to the shed lock. The NIA IRP Receiving Office and the NIA IRP Safety Office also have the combination to the lock.

*NOTE: If in doubt of proper disposal of waste, put in biohazard [mpw] box or call the NIA IRP Safety Office at 410-558-8028.

AUTOCLAVABLE items:

blood and body fluids, other biologicals, sharps and pipets
orange bags or only red bags marked autoclavable
for sharps--autoclavable box/sharps container
After autoclaving, place orange bag, autoclavable red bag, autoclavable box or sharps container in a biohazard box (MPW) for disposal.

*Note: DO NOT dispose of autoclaved bags in regular trash cans.

HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL WASTE

liquid or dry waste or surplus

(in opened or unopened labelled container) containing more than a residual amount.

hazardous chemical pickup Hazardous chemicals in labelled and tagged containers are collected monthly by the NIH Chemical Waste Haulers. Call or email the NIA IRP Safety Office at 410-558-8028 to schedule a pickup & obtain Chemical Waste tags. Maintain segregation of incompatible chemicals when collecting items for disposal.

*Note: DO NOT USE SINKS FOR DISPOSAL OF ANY HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS.

RADIOACTIVE source vials Keep waste source vials with leftover materials separate for pickup. Pickup tag required. Refer to the NIH Waste Disposal Guide.
