Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) - 2000 Junior, York College, City University of New York-Jamaica, New York Major: Psychology/Gerontology |
| During the summer of 2000, I had the opportunity of being engaged in cutting-edge research at the National Institute on Aging (NIA). This was a dream come true - just being here at such a prestigious institution and learning from the finest. My internship was at the Statistical and Experimental Design Section of the Research Resources Branch. I was very fortunate to be taught by very patient and knowledgeable mentors, Dr. Larry Brant and Dr. Shan Sheng. They took the time and effort to ensure that I learned computer programs such as SAS, Sigma Plot and Powerpoint. At the same time, I worked on developing a screening device for the detection of Alzheimer's disease using longitudinal measurements. |
| Being a (MARC) student fellow is a wonderful privilege. I joined the program in June 1999, and since then I have been exposed to a wealth of enriching experiences and opportunities. Being allowed the opportunity to develop research skills on a study of the psychological adjustment of spouse caregivers after nursing home placement, has been a great learning experience. It has also been one that has instilled a deep desire within me to go further in the field of aging-related research. |
| I know, without a doubt, that the whole experience of being in the MARC program, which led to my being here, is one that I wouldn't trade for anything. Not only did I further develop practical skills and knowledge which would be excellent preparation for graduate school and beyond, but I also had a lot of fun. I encountered some of the most wonderful, fun-loving students from different backgrounds and institutions across the country and we developed great friendships. I say, "Hats off to a terrific summer and a most rewarding experience!" |
