First Year Medical Student, Univesity of Puerto Rico School of Medicine
For the past two years, I have done internships at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) in Baltimore, Maryland. During my first summer (1999), I had just finished my Junior year at the University of Puerto Rico. Without much previous research skill, I came to the NIA hoping to gain as much knowledge as possible. I was very pleased with my experience and learned much more than I thought I would.
Learning newly developed laboratory techniques, working closely with some of the world's most respected scientists, and watching how research goes from bench work to the bedside, are only some of the benefits that I received from my NIA training. Besides these benefits, there are other long term career advantages, such as networking, and personal benefits, such as meeting students from around the world and having the opportunity to learn about their different ethnic backgrounds.
I have just received my bachelor degree in Science and will start medical school in Puerto Rico this August. As a returning student, I had the opportunity to continue the work I started last summer with Mentors, Dr. Michel Bernier and Dr. Sanjay Pandey in the Diabetes Section of the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation.
The working staff of the Diabetes Section provided me with a comfortable and relaxing environment that made me realize that "research is not reserved for a select few."
Although my main goal is to become a physician, through my experience, I have come to understand that scientific research is a powerful career. It can be immensely rewarding in the sense that you get to answer some of the bits and pieces of unanswered questions, as well as help others.
Personally this has been an enriching experience and I encourage other students to pursue a research career.
