McCrae RR, Costa PT, Jr. Personality is transcontextual: A reply to Veroff. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin 1984;10(2):175-179.

Comments on the proposal by J. Veroff (see PA, Vol 71:11974) that personality must be defined within historical, developmental, and social contexts. Several alternative interpretations of his TAT findings are offered, and it is contended that contextual interpretations focus unwarranted attention on unreplicable results. The research experience of the present authors indicates that personality is stable in adulthood and that relations between personality and important outcomes hold over a wide variety of contexts.
