Nat'l Advisory Council on Aging Is Headed By Dr. Lamont-Havers
A 12-member National Advisory Council on Aging has been appointed to advise and make recommendations to the HEW Secretary on programs and research relating to the aged and aging. The Council will especially stress the studies of the new National Institute on Aging.
NIA, a component of NIH, was established last October to conduct and support biomedical, social and behavioral research and training activities on the aging process and the needs of the aged. Council members will advise the Secretary on applications for grants to conduct research projects, and applications for national research service awards regarding research manpower projects.
Meet 3 Times a Year
The Council, headed by Dr. Ronald W. Lamont-Havers, Acting Director of NIH, will include four ex officio members, and meet 3 times a year.
Council members are: Dr. Edwin L. Bierman, University of Washington, Seattle; Dr. Harold Brody, State University of New York at Buffalo; Maria del pilar Christian, University of Puerto Rico, and Katherine Dunham, Southern Illinois University. Also, Dr. John Collins Harvey, Georgetown University Hospital; Dr. Leonard Hayflick, Stanford University, and Herman Harvey Jones, III, Meharry Medical College. Also, Dr. Richard K.C. Lee, Research Corporation, University of Hawaii; Dr. George L. Maddox, Duke University Medical Center, and Florence S. Mahoney, Washington, D.C. Also, Dr. Bernice L. Neugarten, University of Chicago, and Dr. Elizabeth S.Russel, Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor.
Ex officio members are: Dr. Carl Eisdorfer, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle; Dr. Paul A. Haber, Veterans Administration, Washington, D.C., and Dr. Martin Sicker, Administration on Aging, Washington, D.C.
